Evaluate battery backup by the equipment it can support and the required runtime. Storage capacity, output power and the home’s electrical arrangement all matter.
Separate power from runtime
List the loads you want to operate together and how long they are needed. Ask for an assessment based on those loads rather than a broad “whole-home” label. Larger starting demands and prolonged outages can change the appropriate system.
Check the existing installation
Solar compatibility, available space, electrical connections and manufacturer requirements need review. Confirm whether the proposed system supports backup operation and what installation changes are necessary; not every solar installation already provides outage power.
Avoid relying on unverified benefits
Do not assume a rebate, insurance discount or resale increase applies. Verify any program separately. For medical or other critical equipment, use a device-specific emergency plan with the equipment provider; home backup is not a guarantee of uninterrupted life-support power. Confirm the contractor’s scope before purchasing a battery system.
