The EV Charging 80% Rule: Battery Limit vs Circuit Load

“80%” can refer to two different things: the vehicle’s battery charge target or electrical continuous-load sizing. A battery percentage is not a circuit setting, and the two should not be used interchangeably.

Battery charge targets are vehicle-specific

Use the recommendation in your vehicle’s current manual or charging interface. Battery type, vehicle configuration and intended trip can affect that guidance. Do not apply a universal daily 80% battery limit to every EV.

Circuit loading is an installation-design question

EV charging is treated as a continuous electrical load. The familiar 80% discussion concerns the relationship between sustained charging current and appropriately designed circuit capacity, not how full the battery should be. Equipment ratings, protection and applicable rules must all be assessed together.

What should an owner do?

Follow the vehicle guidance for the battery target and the installer’s documented equipment configuration for charging output. Do not increase current settings or change circuit protection based on an online calculation. If charging needs change, request a review of the installation.
