A home with solar needs an equipment-specific backup design. Do not assume its inverter, battery and proposed generator can operate together simply because each supplies electricity.
Inventory the existing system
Provide the solar inverter and battery model numbers, available diagrams and installer records. Identify the equipment that controls backup operation and the circuits already supported. The contractor needs the actual system architecture, not just the panel count.
Verify compatibility in writing
Ask the equipment manufacturers or qualified system designer which integration arrangements are supported. Transfer controls, charging behavior and protection must be considered together. Avoid universal claims that every solar system can, or cannot, work with a generator.
Define the operating limits
Ask which loads are supported, how switching occurs and what happens when fuel or stored energy runs low. Solar output varies, and neither solar nor a generator promises indefinite runtime. Coordinate the relevant electrical, fuel and permit requirements before installation.
