Prepare Your Illinois Home for EV Charger Installation

Before buying a charger, gather the vehicle specifications, parking details and electrical information needed for an installation assessment. Preparation can prevent purchasing equipment that does not suit the property.

Record your charging needs

Note the vehicle model, normal daily driving and when the car is parked at home. Check the manufacturer’s connector and charging guidance. The highest-output charger is not automatically the best match for the vehicle or the available supply.

Show the proposed location

Provide photos of the parking space, the closed electrical panel and the route between them. Identify a detached garage, shared ownership or finished surfaces. Do not open the panel or use an extension cord as a permanent charging plan.

Confirm the project sequence

Ask the contractor to assess capacity and equipment suitability, then define permit, installation and inspection responsibilities. Local requirements vary across Illinois. Keep the installation schedule separate from the date you expect to receive the vehicle.
