Check the electrical permit requirements with the authority responsible for your Illinois address before installing a charger or changing its supply circuit. There is no single municipal application that covers every Illinois property.
Identify the authority for the address
A city, village or county may administer the electrical approval. A postal city name is not enough to establish jurisdiction. Describe whether the work adds a circuit, replaces equipment, changes the service or serves shared parking. Ask which application and inspection process applies to that scope.
Examples show why local checks matter
Northbrook publishes separate EV guidance for single-family and multi-family/commercial properties. Naperville’s guidance discusses load calculations for wiring upgrades, while Elgin has a dedicated EV permit process. Use these as examples of local variation, not as rules for an address elsewhere.
Prepare the installation information
Have the property address, charger specifications and proposed location ready. Ask who submits the application, supplies electrical details, coordinates inspections and closes out the permit. A charger purchase receipt or association approval does not replace the required electrical process.
Do not confuse capacity with permission
The permit process and the electrical load assessment answer different questions. An electrician must assess the proposed installation even if the panel has spare breaker positions. Confirm requirements before work starts; do not assume a plug-in product is exempt from rules affecting new wiring.
