The cost of replacing knob-and-tube wiring depends on how much remains active, where it runs and how the work can be accessed. A property-specific assessment is more useful than an unsupported citywide price range.
Establish what needs replacement
Old wiring visible in one area does not establish the system used throughout the property. Ask the electrician to identify the assessed areas, limitations and proposed replacement scope. Discuss alterations and any available previous records. Do not disturb old wiring to investigate it.
Access and restoration affect the project
Open walls, occupied rooms, finished ceilings and concealed routes create different work requirements. Ask where openings may be needed and whether patching, plaster repair and painting are included. A wiring quote is not automatically a complete interior restoration quote.
Assess the panel separately
Rewiring is an opportunity to review the electrical system, but a service-capacity increase should have its own justification. Ask whether the panel recommendation addresses condition, added loads or another specific issue. Do not assume every old-wiring project requires the same upgrade.
Compare complete written proposals
Look for the circuits and rooms included, equipment, access work, permit responsibility, inspection and exclusions. Clarify how concealed conditions or scope changes are approved. A lower quote may cover different work; it is not proof of poor workmanship by itself.
Coordinate occupancy and other requirements
Discuss work phases, interruptions and any requirements supplied by an insurer, buyer or property manager. Obtain those requirements from the relevant party rather than assuming every policy treats partial replacement the same way. Keep completion records with the property documents.
