Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Electrician

Use the same questions with each contractor so you can compare scope, responsibilities and cost. Ask for answers that apply to your project rather than relying on general marketing promises.

Who is responsible for the work?

Who performs the installation? Which qualifications and insurance apply? Who coordinates the permit, inspection and utility if needed? Is any work subcontracted or assigned to the owner?

What does the price cover?

Is this a diagnostic charge, an estimate or a fixed scope? Which equipment is included? What happens if concealed conditions are found? Are finishing work, disposal and other trades included? How are changes authorized?

What should I expect at completion?

What access and outages are needed? Which scheduling dependencies remain? What testing, labels and records will be provided? Ask for warranty terms in writing and distinguish product coverage from workmanship terms. Keep the accepted proposal with your property records.
