Choose backup power around the loads you need and the interruption you can tolerate. A generator, battery system and small uninterruptible power supply solve different problems.
List the priorities
Record essential equipment and how long it needs to operate. Refrigeration, communications and larger motor-driven equipment have different power requirements. Identify equipment that cannot tolerate even a brief interruption separately from general household convenience.
Compare capacity and runtime
A system’s power rating and stored energy or fuel supply answer different questions. Ask what can operate simultaneously and what limits runtime. Do not treat “whole-house” or “backup” as a guarantee that every load can run indefinitely.
Plan before the storm
Arrange the installation assessment, required approvals and operating instructions before relying on the system. Never connect a portable generator to household wiring through an improvised outlet connection. Follow manufacturer placement and carbon-monoxide safety instructions.
